Irish & Latin Names

This is an incomplete list of birds that you may spot in Mayo, with names in English, Irish and Latin.

To view a complete list of the birds of Ireland in the three languages, along with accompanying photographs, please visit this page on Birdwatch Ireland’s website.

Some of our Irish language names are wonderfully evocative, such as “screamer of the graveyard” (Barn Owl), “cat head” (Long-eared owl), “catcher of sparkling things” (Magpie) and others.
